gain of the entire year yesterday. for more, we want to head to steve sedgwick in london with the latest. good day to you. >> very good day it to you. there wasn't just one thing that sent this market up yesterday. i think it was a whole most of matters. including the fact that we could be closer to ending that stalemate, including the fact that the housing starts were the best we've seen in six months and also the fact that across the board, we saw some really good earnings from some real big bellwethers in the u.s. corporate scene. >> if you can quickly apple one of those bellwethers with a blowout quarter, do you have some of those details? just amazing numbers. >> it really was a blowout and it sent the shares up to a new record high. the profit more than doubled to $7.3 billion. the revenue surged 82%. and it was the best quarter in the company's history. they put out on to the market 20.34 million iphones. what was expected was 17 million to 18 million iphones. ipad 2s were also flying off the shelves. >> i added my name to that list, as well. steve sedgwick, appreciate it.
get a check of business with steve sedgwick in london. the first question is, what will happen to rupert murdoch's companies in the u.s.? is anyone else in jeopardy right now, including his son? >> reporter: there are real question marks about where the buck stops. many people thought rebekah brooks, a close confidente of rupert murdoch, would be safe but she's the latest member of his empire to fall on her sword. real questions about u.s. titles and whether they'll be tainted as well. those titles include the fox cable network, "the wall street journal," which has a strong editorial representation, and of course dow jones news who i worked for at one stage in my career. a lot of questions about those titles and what kind of governance news corp. will look like going forward. lots of question marks about the independence of the news corp. board and whether we'll see moves on that front as rupert murdoch is forced to relinquish some power. >> the u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton in athens, greece, voicing strong support for that country, including their debt crisis. there is
predictions headed true. congratulations on that. steve buscemi got nam natuominn. anything else jump out? >> kyra sedgwick continue gdid nominated and she was the winner last year. so that's probably the biggest snub of the morning to come -- the show is also in its final season. typically people like to get nominated -- like to give nominations for shows in their final season. >> any surprise to how many of the nominations were for that much havemovie series the kenne? >> a shocking number. it had a pretty troubled back story, but i believe i saw at least two or three. that's a huge coup for the kennedys. >> and in the comedy series which was the last category announced, big bang theory, glee, modern family, office, parks and recreation, 30 rock. usually suspects there. >> i'd go back to drama and say the big coup there was game of throwns getting nominated for hbo. that's a show that's not necessarily for the emmy voteth voting audience. it's fantasy which usually gets snubbed. i also think in the comedy actress category, melissa mccarthy getting nominated, that's the first season
